We think we know the Maghreb: mostly we know its neighbours. Algeria keeps to itself. Timgad and Djémila line up their Roman colonnades under a dry sky, the Casbah tumbles down towards the bay of Algiers. And the Sahara begins just south of Ghardaïa. At Tassili n'Ajjer, giraffes carved into sandstone recall a time when the desert was green. Vast, and so little travelled.
